About the City of Newark

Welcome to Newark

Sunset in Newark, CaliforniaThe City of Newark, located across the Dumbarton Bridge from Palo Alto at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, offers the comfort of a small community in the midst of the cosmopolitan San Francisco Bay Area. Industry and residents find the City an ideal place to work, play, and live a quality lifestyle.

Industrial and commercial developments are thriving within the city of over 43,000 residents. Approximately 4 million square feet of new industrial space has been added to the city since 1990 and in 2005 there are approximately 21,000 jobs available in Newark. The NewPark Mall offers 1.3 million square feet of retail space including major department stores, a food court and other restaurants as well as a 20-screen Century Theatre to begin construction in 2005. There are numerous neighborhood shopping centers located throughout the community.

Newark enjoys a unique setting with easy access to all parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. The ideal climate of the area is epitomized in Newark's 65 to 70 degree mean temperature. Protection from coastal fog by a prevailing wind off the Bay gives Newark almost continuous sun with moderate temperatures.

Newark enjoys a wealth of leisure and recreational activities for all ages. The naturalist finds the adjacent 21,000-acre South San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge an exciting opportunity to view wildlife in its natural habitat. The United States Department of Interior's outstanding interpretive centers heighten this enjoyment of the special resource. Adventurers can explore the sprawling Mission Peak Regional Preserve rising 1500 feet out of the Bay plain and 900-acre Coyote Hills, minutes from the city. The 12-mile Alameda Creek Regional Trail, a biking and equestrian delight less than a mile away, connects the Bay shoreline with Niles canyon, a semi-wilderness area owned by the San Francisco Water Department in the nearby coastal hills.

Newark's Place to Play!

The George M. Silliman Community Activity and Family Aquatic Center is a stunning 68,730 squarefoot, state-of-the-art center with activities ranging from preschool classes to senior aqua aerobics. The first phase of the center was completed in February 2000 and resulted in a multi-use building with a double Gymnasium, an Aerobic/Dance Studio, a Fitness Center, Meeting Room, Preschool Classroom and Teen Activity area. Activities held within phase I of the center include youth and adult sports leagues, camps and clinics; youth and adult jazz dance and ballet; community meetings, preschool and kinder-prep classes; teen center drop-in and programs and fitness center.

The much anticipated Family Aquatic Center opened to overflow crowds in July of 2004. The new center integrates seamlessly with phase I, appearing to be a single building. The swimming facility is completely indoors and features an 18,900 square-foot Natatorium with four pools: a 25-yard, 4-lane Lap Pool; a 245- foot-long Lazy River which surrounds a Splash Down Pool for a pair of 20-foot-high water slides; a 45-foot by 75-foot Activity Pool for water play activities for younger children; and a 15-person Warm Water Spa.
