Newark Paratransit.  Newark seniors ages 65 and above and disabled ages 18 and above can call Newark Paratransit at 510-791-7879 for shared ride door-to-door transportation between Newark, Union City and most of Fremont.  The current cost for each one-way trip within Newark is $1.  Rides traveling to Fremont or Union City cost $2 for each one-way trip.  Please make your reservation at least 24 hours in advance with the Transportation Coordinator, between the hours of 9:00am - 4:00pm., Monday - Friday.  Newark Paratransit offers rides from 8:30am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday and from 9:00am - 2:00pm, Saturday and Sunday.  Please make your reservation as soon as possible; Newark Paratransit is no an unlimited resource.  Although we strive to meet participants' transportation needs, there are times that your ride reservation can not be made due to a full schedule.  For those that meet the criteria, it might be beneficial to apply to East Bay Paratransit as a backup mode of transportation.  Newark Paratransit registered riders are also eligible to utilize a subsidized taxi program.  This is made possible through a generous Measure B gap grant.  For more information, please contact Margrith Reichmuth at 510-742-4844.

East Bay Paratransit Service is transportation for people who are unable to use buses or Bart trains because of a disability or a disabling health condition.  All riders must be certified as eligible to use this paratransit program.  To receive an application to apply for eligibility, or for more information please call 800-555-8085.

VIP Rides links seniors and disabled individuals with a volunteer to accompany/assist them while traveling to appointments, grocery shopping or errands using local Paratransit.  Volunteers may use their own vehicles to drive ambulatory senior or disabled individuals who require door to door service.  The cities of Fremont, Newark and Union City have partnered with LIFE ElderCare, a non-profit organization, which recruits, trains and supervises the volunteer travel escorts.  If you are interested in applying for the VIP Rides program or would like additional information, please contact Lori Vogel, Travel Escort Coordinator, with Life Eldercare, at 510-574-2096.

Discount Senior Bart Tickets.  The Newark Senior Center, as a service to the senior community, sells discounted senior Bart tickets to eligible seniors ages 65 and above.  The Bart ticket costs $9 and provides $24 of travel.  For more information, please contact Margrith Reichmuth at 510-742-4844.

Meals on Wheels delivers hot, nutritious mid-day meals to frail seniors.  The meals are delivered by dedicated volunteers who also deliver a warm smile, a kind word, an a check on their well-being.  Call 510-574-2092 for more information.

Friendly Visitor matches frail, isolated seniors with volunteers that provide companionship through weekly visits, phone calls and outings.  Call 510-574-2097 for more information.

Get Up and Go, a falls prevention program, is FREE to frail, homebound seniors, 60 and older in the Tri-City area.  Falls can be prevented.  The program is designed to provide the exercising skills needed to prevent injury from falling.  Seniors will be provided with a weekly in-home coaching by an LVN student.  For more information or to sign up please call Cecilia Balleza 510-574-2087 or Maureen Parent at 510-574-2088.
